Special Announcements to Our Readers
Website & Program Changes
In February of 2006 I launched this website and began the columns, Author’s Response to Readers’ Questions, and the Magical Thought of the Week. Both have become very popular, as our website statistics have shown. Throughout the past year many interesting and relevant questions pertaining to Old System Magic in general and my books in particular were answered in the author’s response column, while the magical thoughts of the week were always aimed toward giving the reader an ever-increasing understanding of the ‘what,’ ‘how,’ and ‘why’ of that pure form of magical practice I term, “Old System Magic.” However, as the months passed, a different set of conditions emerged. The number of interesting and relevant questions grew less and less; the number of belligerent, asinine, and ludicrous enquires grew more and more. This is not to mention the tirade of ‘hate mail,’ and not-so-few threats I received: all at the hands of some very disgruntled New Age types whose ‘belief’ in their maniacal system of ‘Magick’ had been thoroughly undermined by this revival of True Magic. Additionally, totally nonsensical emails have been pouring in, all showing an utter lack of even a basic intelligence which is the hallmark of the ‘New Age’ and its cronies. Just to give you a few examples:
The Bad and the Ugly
- Complaints that when I recommended a book a while back, I misspelled the author’s first name by leaving out a single letter. According to the complaints, they then had great difficulties finding the book on Amazon, even though the full title was given! Not a few recommended I “apologize” for this, and rerun the name with the missing “letter” in the question-and answer column!
My Reply: Learn to think, and do some work on your own. I will not
waste my time or space on this website on such frivolities as
“apologies” for that which requires no apology.
- Complaints that I am “too harsh” on the New Age, and should seek entry into one of the “REAL” lodges (whatever that word “real” means) so I can be “…trained properly in Golden Dawn Magic…”
My Reply: Never mind that I was not only a member of the Argentum
Astrum years ago, but that I was also a member of one of the schools
of the Golden Dawn itself: in fact, it was the one co-founded by
Regardie immediately prior to his death (I still have my original
membership card.) These facts are very well known throughout the New Age community. Looking back on it now I am even less impressed with what that system of Magick teaches, and with the lack of tangible, real-world results those teachings produce, than I was when I was a member of these “Orders.” Clearly, I would not waste my time with such again, seeing I have no need to “rising on the planes” while my daily life fell apart. I leave that for the “enlightened” of the various stalwart ‘magickal’ groups.
- Demands that I formally apologize to the memories of Crowley and all of his followers, for not being “…more spiritual in recognizing the legitimacy of his teachings and of the many organizations that promote those teachings…”
My Reply: I have no arguments with Crowley, in that I recognize he devised a system of Magic(k) that worked—for him. As to his followers and their insistence that ‘one size fits all’…they’ll erect altars to Christ in Hell before I apologize to any of his followers or their organizations.
- Further demands that I publicly apologize to living authors who are spreading “…the True Gospel of the New Age Glory…” as one writer phrased it.
My Reply: My Four Words apply here: WHERE ARE THE RESULTS? In 44 years in this field, I have never seen any results of any consequence from those who practiced this New Age approach … and that includes myself. That is, not until I extracted myself from its siren’s call. I just visited a large bookstore yesterday and took a look at the “New Age” section. The nonsense it was filled with was beyond belief, showing in no uncertain terms the exponential decay of that which they posture as “Magick.” I and those of you who are now following Old System Magic know the truth: and this is where we will stay. We are looking for—and receiving—real-world results. And that is what Magic is all about.
- Outright demands for private answers to individual letters because “…(the matters they raised) are of vital concern to me…You got to take the time to reply…”
My Reply: Everyone’s ‘need’—whether real or imagined—are as pressing as any other’s. Besides my scientific research, scientific consulting, writing, and involvement with my private students, I have very little time for anything that even resembles a ‘normal’ life as it is. Thus I cannot—and will not—oblige such ‘demands.’
- A plethora of letters from individuals who literally cannot clearly express a single thought or write a simple, coherent sentence let alone a paragraph, but who insist they are ready for Evocation to Physical Manifestation, and who insist their “…spirit guides”…have told them that “…your Ceremonial Magic book is all wrong but certain parts of it should be used so you better make changes to it (so it “agrees” with the particular grimoire they intend to work from.)” They further demand that “…you set up a separate chat room where we can ‘discuss’ these matters with our other “evokers” or at least put our letters on this page…”
My Reply: Then do what you must—and suffer accordingly. The chat
room originally scheduled was cancelled for the very reason you cite:
having New Age proponents ‘talk’ of their mindless approaches to a
very serious and dangerous subject.
I will make no changes in anything I have written. All stands as is.
- Individuals demanding I explain why my old friend and colleague, C. S. Hyatt, wrote introductions to my books that decry pacts with the Fallen Angels, while he yet wrote one entitled, “Pacts with the Devil.”
My Reply: Clearly, these people do not understand Hyatt’s experimental approach to these matters, the basic theory underlying interaction with demons, and the stages of growth that the Practitioner passes through in his process of Spiritual Unfoldment. But how could they? They are New Age ‘theorists,’ and have about as much experience in this darkest corner of Magic as I do in being a Southern Baptist! Not only are Hyatt’s and my views on these matters not antagonistic, they are complimentary in many ways. Thus, he was the perfect Occultist to write the introductions to my books — and still is.
- Yet others insisting that I explain why I advocate New Thought—what I refer to as “Higher Mysticism”—since it demands one use “visualization/imaging” and “affirmation” techniques.
My Reply: again, these individuals neither understand the difference between the “imaging” I teach, and the “visualization” which their New Age calls for. Nor do they understand the difference between one of their so-called “Invocations,” a “Prayer,” and an “Affirmation,” all of which I have thoroughly spelled out both in my books and on this website. And as the next reply will further show, New Thought has nothing whatsoever to do with “visualization” (in fact, those methods of New Thought that truly do work to produce full results have very little to do with Imaging either. That is, they employ Imaging only in so far as one forming the most ‘general thought template’ of that which is desired.)
- “Golden Dawners” adamantly telling me that New Thought actually “…arose from Golden Dawn Magic…” and that I “…must give the credit for New Thought where it’s due: to the original Golden Dawn London Society!…”
- My Reply: Apparently, they never heard of the work of Ralph Waldo Trine and his book, In Tune With the Infinite, which is regarded as the first independently published book on New Thought, and which is given credit for being one of the major works on the subject that sparked the New Thought Movement itself. And it was published in—1897! That is, his final manuscript, originally written in 1889, was published years before their famous Golden Dawn was being torn asunder by internal strife, and moving toward its ultimate 1900 collapse. Further, one has only to read Trine in the most cursory way to see if any ‘Golden Dawn’ material—even theoretical—is in it. The philosophy of the Golden Dawn—and the Mysticism of Trine—are as different in theory and practice as are night and day.
In the same vein, the people demanding I acknowledge the GD as
having created the Mysticism of New Thought have no knowledge
whatsoever of the existence and work of others in the field of mystical enquiry which has come to be termed “New Thought.” For instance: they apparently are completely oblivious to the late 19th century writings and teachings of Emilie Cady and Charles Fillmore, cofounder, who began the Unity Movement of circa 1890, the very time at which the first Golden Dawn Temple was getting underway in England. Formally called the Unity School of Christianity, the groundbreaking works of Cady and Fillmore—along with Trine’s and a number of others less well known—constituted the initial creative impulse that launched the New Thought Movement.
Further, unlike the bickering and backstabbing of the famous London GD Temple ‘elite’ of the 1890’s, enthusiastic collaboration between the schools of thought arising within the original New Thought Movement was the order of the day. Example: Emilie Cady—a staunch independent—published several of her most notable works in Unity Magazine, the official organ of the Unity School of Christianity in 1894-95 (these were then published as three paperbacks for the general public in 1896-1897.)
So WHERE IS THE PROOF that the Golden Dawn was responsible for the New Thought Movement? Clearly, there is none.
But the Golden Dawn did has its effect, or so I speculate it did. That is, I cannot prove it empirically, but my research suggests more than a casual connection exists between the New Thought Movement and the original Golden Dawn as operated in England in the 1890’s. And that is, that after the Golden Breakup in 1900, a plethora of new books arose on the subject of New Thought, the great majority of which suddenly began teaching “visualization” as part of their process. Not only that, but the visualization techniques they insisted upon are in every way exactly the same as can be found in any New Age book today—be it on Magick or on visualization techniques designed to bring about one’s desires. For instance, the numerous works of Wattles (1902) Wilcox (1902) Towne (1904) Fritz (1906) Larson (1908) Sears (1919) Schubel (1922) and Van Resselaer Day (1928) are only a few of the many that initiated this unfortunate trend, while the latter works of Fersen (1929) Landone (1937) and Collier (1943) continued it. And of course, these later efforts were seized upon by the New Age and—‘expanded’ into the non-functional miasma of so-called “New Thought” that generally exists today.
In short, as the GD history states, most members of the original London Temple were “unknowns” who drifted away after the demise of the Temple. It may be that such people as Wattles—amidst dozens of others—were indeed members of the Order, or were acquainted with those who were. In either case, disillusioned due to the breakup of the GD, it is my opinion that they seized upon the New Thought Movement and added their “visualization” techniques to it, thus destroying the genuine techniques behind this form of Mysticism; techniques that indeed do allow New Thought—or “Higher Mysticism” as I term it— to work—fully, and without any Slingshot Effect. So much then for the people who lay claim that the GD “created” New Thought. As far as I am concerned, all that the (former) members of the original GD did to the New Thought Movement was contaminate it, as they attempted to do to Old System Magic.
These are a very few of the bizarre, un-researched, and nonsensical
enquiries that have besieged us at 8th Matrix Press during the last
several months.
The Good
But there has been a bright side that persisted throughout these last several months as well, when the above absurdities were coming in. Namely:
- A substantial number of (other) readers asked for expanded discussions and answers on serious questions relating to my books in particular and to Old System Magic in general
- Very pointed comments from these readers, asking that I dismiss any and all any trite questions and deal only with those that pertain to Old System Magic
- The above group of readers asking me to write a newsletter that will address the serious issues of Old System Magic, if such could not be addressed in a relatively short period of time on this website. (I take questions as they are received, and answer them in turn, causing interesting questions to be backlogged, sometimes, for several months.)
The Solution
After considering all of the above conditions, the following decisions were made. The first two are being implemented as of this date. The third will begin as soon as I hear from those who suggested this change be made.
- The Author’s Response to Readers’ Questions column is hereby ended. There will be no more postings of such queries, for the reasons given above. The entire year’s postings will remain up and active on this website as archive files, so veteran readers can download—or copy and paste them—to their own files or notebooks and use them as they see fit. This will also allow newcomers who discover this site the opportunity to save these files so they too can benefit from them.
- The Magical Thought of the Week column is likewise ended as of today. As with the question-and-answer column, the entire year’s postings will remain up and active on this website as archive files, so veteran readers can download—or copy and paste them—to their own files or notebooks and use them as they see fit. Maintaining these files will also allow those newcomers the same opportunity of saving these files, so they too can benefit from them as well.
- A newsletter, Studies in the Theory and Practice of Old System Magic and Mysticism, Issue No. 1, Volume 1, will be released on May 1. One issue per month, in PDF format, will address the very issues that working students are concerned with. Each issue will be 10-20 pages in length, and will deal with: reader questions on Old System Magic; my books on the subject; discussions on the various magical grimoires; the crafting of the impedimenta of the Art as covered in separate grimoires; suggestions on developing one’s own eclectically balanced, personal system of magical growth and Spiritual Unfoldment; methods of building and polishing one’s subconscious state of Subjective Synthesis; book reviews; and every so often, a relevant piece on Mysticism, to name but a few of the matters that will be addressed in the pages of this newsletter.
To make certain the New Age crowd stays away from it, this newsletter will be available by subscription only, at the cost of $20.00 per year.
Individuals interested in subscribing can write to me at
Further details will then be sent to those responding to this newsletter announcement. I will guarantee one thing: that this newsletter will be the most unique of its kind anywhere.
New Books Coming Soon
- My third Occult Horror novel, NightShadow, written in 2002, will be available in a few months. Further details regarding its release will be posted here within the next few weeks.
- The first two Occult Horror novels, Geometries of the Mind and The Altar Path, are being released in a new edition. As with NightShadow, they too will be available within a few months. Further details regarding their final release dates will be posted here within the next few weeks.
- The following Horror novels are also in one state or another of preparation and will be published as soon as possible. Homunculus, The Terror Primeval, The Visitor, The Evocation, and, Mind Worm.
- There will be six books on Old System Magic as well. Four will deal with one of the classical grimoires, with commentaries and recommendations given on how to work each effectively and safely for maximum results, and with as little of the Slingshot Effect as possible. Those interested are invited to revisit this website over the coming months for further information as to these books’ availability.
- Three books in New Thought (“Higher Mysticism”) will also be released. In them, the mystically inclined will find absolute ways of turning their deepest desires into realities as manifested in the world of form. Further information on their status will be posted here in the months to come.
- Despite rumor and innuendo, the book on Alchemy, Israel Regardie and the Philosopher’s Stone, will be submitted to New Falcon Publications by the early summer. It is a powerful book, which reveals much of what occurred alchemically—and personally—between Israel Regardie, Frater Albertus, and myself outside of the 7 yearly classes. Two reviewers who have read its contents thus far were very enthusiastic as to what it revealed. Said one of the reviewers, “…the background given in this book fills in many of the unknowns as far as the private interactions between the three of you are concerned. This is important from a historical point of view, because all too often speculation replaces what really occurred. The alchemy discussed will also clarify many laboratory alchemy issues that are now completely clouded…”
- There will be no three separate books on laboratory alchemy. After reviewing my personal experimental notebooks on the subject, and the extensive public and private letters that passed between Regardie, Frater Albertus, and myself, I realized that putting ‘enough’ in each volume to make it self-contained within two covers of a book was an impossibility. Thus, I am presenting the material in the only way I feel it can be presented: in a 60 Lesson Course entitled,
Practical Laboratory Alchemy — Its Theory and
Praxis
The course will be available only by subscription from 8th Matrix Press. There will be one lesson per month. Each lesson will be complete with illustrations, and where applicable, a CD ROM giving photos of my own experimental results which will enable the student to ‘know what to look for’ while doing the Work. As I noted in this column many times, the lessons will be expensive: $35.00 per lesson, with very significant price breaks for those who sign up for 6 months and 1 year’s worth of lessons at a time.
The first lesson will be available November 1, 2007. Individuals interested in signing up for the course are encouraged to write to me at
With these announcements, the first goal of this website—which was to make available to all the basics of Old System Magic—has been accomplished. All future postings on this site will be devoted to taking that primary goal to higher and higher levels. I invite all of those workers in Magic, Mysticism and Alchemy to join me in taking the next steps in becoming who you already are. — Joseph C. Lisiewski, Ph.D.

Magical Thought of the Week of February 19 - 25, 2007.
Concerning Various Manifestations During Magical Rites
In the Author’s Response to Readers’ Questions column for this week, a reader asked a question that I felt should be expanded upon in this column. In the question under consideration, the querent asked about the forms taken by demons, spirits, and angels during various magical rites. The question touches upon a very deep subject indeed; and while it would take (at least) one entire book to adequately broach this subject, some additional comments made by me here might provide further food for thought. I am reproducing that question and my reply (in italics) here, so that the reader does not have to flip back and forth between columns. Following this are some additional remarks that may prove to be of use to the interested Practitioner. (As you will note, I cover additional phenomena in the report given below, not simply the forms of entities dealt with in question Q–4 proper. Why do I do this? Because all forms of physical manifestation that occur during magical rites are related at some fundamental level.)
Q–4 When the form of an angel, demon or spirit manifests on our physical plane is this form just a symbolic representation of their true nature? What is the nature of an angel, demon or spirit’s existence before and after an evocation?
A–4 As to your first question. In the case of a demon, yes, but only to a point. In my experience, the manifested form of the Fallen Angels is more or less indicative of the nature of the spirit being summoned. That is, of that part of its nature that is in agreement with the purpose for which we are calling upon it. For example. If I call upon one to aid me in obtaining a business contract I am interested in, he will—after the initial terrifying physical phenomena attendant to his manifestation—have a manifested temperament that is somewhat reserved and thoughtful. (This does not mean his appearance will be pleasant; at least, not until I charge him to assume “…a more appropriate and pleasing appearance to my purposes….”)
In the case of a divine Angel, the glimpses that one may—and I stress may—be fortunate enough to receive on an intermittent basis during the rite, will always be indicative of their nature, and over that which they rule. For instance, in the case of Michael, his appearance is very classical, the sword he wields being extremely bright and glaring, and his entire appearance surrounded by the deepest red fire that can be imagined.
As to the nature of a demon or spirit before or after the Evocation to Physical Manifestation? I have no idea. Nor do I want to. It is enough to deal with them in the Circle of Art during the Ceremonial act. I leave it at that.
As to Evocation to Physical Appearance of an Angel? In my opinion—and experience—aside from the “glimpses” I spoke of above, these concentrations of divine energy and consciousness cannot be brought into physical manifestation. Their nature—both the energy of their existence and the rarefied consciousness to which it gives rise—prohibits such blatant manifestations. Again, this is only according to my own experience. Others may have differing experiences, but in my 44 years of practicing Magic, I have never encountered such others. (End of Q&A)
Additional comments:
It depends upon the magical rite being conducted of course, but I have found some unusual forms of manifestation to occur during my own practice. Elaborating upon the details of the practices I was involved in that produced the following results is beyond the scope of this paper. But suffice it to say that it was during the “Experimental Magic” phase of my career—which occupied nearly 30 years of my 44 years in the field—that the phenomena cited below were produced. I trust the forms of manifestation described below will be of some use to the worker in Magic; for there are many different forms of manifestations, although I have found that those listed below occur across the board, Evocation to Physical Manifestation notwithstanding. That is, the latter Ceremonial act has its own ‘types’ of manifestations, which I have already covered in my books and on this web site. Take from what follows what you will.
- Flashes of multicolored lights appear and float through the air, even in a Magical Chamber lit by a normal electric light. They float in patterns, never in random motion. They begin their travel in a straight up-and-down vertical direction, and then produce vertical zig-zag patterns in the air. Sometimes they are accompanied by….
- Humanoid faces that float between the lights. Their countenances are austere or grim. There is never any sound made by them. Rather, they simply stare at the Magician, floating outside his Sphere of Operation.
- Whispers, the words of which are always indiscernible, fill the air. They do not occur when either the light flashes or floating faces manifest. Rather, they occur alone.
- Heavy breathing, sometimes accompanied by muffled cries or grunts manifest about the Sphere of Operation (the cries are particularly distressing: as if someone were being tortured, or is in pain or agony.) As with the whispering, these are the most unnerving of all phenomena that can be experienced.
- Scratching behind the walls of the Magical Chamber. Sometimes they are rapid; usually however, they are of long, continuous sounds, as if something were trying to claw its way through the wall to get to the Magician.
- Small, angelic-like figures will appear INSIDE the Sphere of Operation (or Circle of Art if an Invocation—not Evocation to Physical Manifestation—is being performed.) They are approximately 4 ½ feet in height, have gray, flowing robes, and are faceless. They will always be found to be holding hands, such that they form a closed ‘circle within the Circle of Art.’ They never speak nor move: they are simply there, holding hands, ‘facing’ each other across the inner circle they have formed. They act as silent ‘sentinels,’ as the Magician proceeds with that which he will.
- There are other secondary phenomena such as winds, tappings, and vibration of walls, and in the very air itself.
All of these manifestations are simply distractions to the work being done, and should be ignored. These are merely a ‘property’ of the rites of Magic, as much as it is a property of water to be wet at room temperature. It will take the Practitioner time to be able to ignore such occurrences, but sooner or later one can succeed in dismissing them as one proceeds with the Work at hand.
One final comment. None of the manifestations listed above can harm
the Magician—if the Circle of Art or/and Sphere of Operation are well-formed and sealed. There can be difficulties if these forms of protection are breached, of course; but as we all know, this too is a property of Magic, and is a probability with which all of us must contend.

Magical Thought of the Week of February 5 - 11, 2007.
Concerning the Preparation of the Magical Impedimenta
In the Author’s Response to Readers’ Questions column this week, a reader asked about the Sword of Art as used in the magical grimoire, the Heptameron. While the content of the question was disconcerting, it did touch upon a number of considerations that apply to all magical impedimenta in general, the specific requirements as laid down by a given grimoire notwithstanding. I am reproducing that question here, along with my reply in italics. Following this are some additional remarks that may prove to be of use to the aspiring magician.
Q–1 I have been over the passage a million times and by my interpretation of your instructions for the heptameron sword consecration (from Ceremonial Magic), and looking at Llewellyn's moon sign books, the consecration cannot be done in the year of 2005 or 2006, only in 2007. Have I misinterpreted? Please explain.
A–1 I have received many enquiries such as yours, so let us examine the issue in terms of the Heptameron only. (I say ‘only’ because other grimoires have other requirements for the Sword’s preparation.) Due to the number of enquiries, I am going to discuss the matter in some small detail, because frankly, I don’t know what the problem is. Hence, I will give an example that should clear up this matter once and for all.
Seeing you did not bother to be specific as to the nature of your problem, I assume you are having difficulty with the astrological conditions under which the Sword is to be made. I say this because all of the other instructions are ‘clearer than clear’ as I read them. So let us begin.
In Ceremonial Magic and the Power of Evocation, of the Sword’s creation it states: “The Sword is to be made during the day and hour ruled by Mars, the Moon being waxing to full phase—that is, during its first or second phase and like the Pentacle, anytime between the second day after the New Moon to the day before the Full Moon. Luna should also be in a Fire sign of the Zodiac.” (page 154, text.)
Now, there are “Four Triplicities” of the Zodiac: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. That is, four ‘sets’ or groupings into which the twelve signs of the Zodiac are divided. In the case of the Fire Triplicity, the following three signs assigned to this ‘set’ are: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Thus, you are seeking a Tuesday, the day ruled by Mars, and an hour ruled by Mars, under which you will consecrate the Sword of Art as required by the Heptameron. Further, you intend to assure that Luna is in a Fire Sign on that particular Tuesday.
According to my 2007 Llewellyn Moon Sign Book, the Moon will be in Aries—and hence a Fire sign—on Tuesday, February 20, which is the third day of the 1st Quarter (or “phase”) and which therefore fulfills the requirement, “The Sword is to be made during the day and hour ruled by Mars, the Moon being waxing to full phase——that is, during its first or second phase… anytime between the second day after the New Moon to the day before the Full Moon. Luna should also be in a Fire sign of the Zodiac.”
Now, what you must further concern yourself with is the planet Mercury, as it is assigned to the eighth Sephirah of the Tree of Life, and hence rules all Magic and magical practices. If you check the Mercury retrogrades for this year in the same Llewellyn Moon Sign Book, you will find that the first of these retrograde periods will occur from February 13 through March 7. Thus, you could not use the February 20 suggested date I gave above.
However, you have nothing to worry about whatsoever. Why do I say this? Because if you read the Moon Sign Book correctly, you will find that the following dates will give you the same astrological requirements needed to consecrate your Sword. That is, the following dates are for a Tuesday, Moon waxing to full, in first or second phase, and in a Fire sign:
Tuesday, March 20 (2nd day of 1st Quarter), Luna in Aries.
The next is Tuesday, March 27, 2nd day of 2nd Quarter, Moon in Leo
and the one following that is Tuesday, April 24, 1st day, 2nd Quarter, Luna in Leo.
There are more to be sure: you must simply learn your basic astrology, and the method of reading the Moon Sign Book. I trust this little exercise will be of use to you and those others who had difficulty in understanding this matter. It is—after all—quite clear and direct, as I have shown here.
I recommend that when the magician is trying to adhere to the requirements in producing and consecrating a particular magical weapon, he avails himself of the following books. He must also learn how to use them properly. It is not enough to open—say, the Llewellyn Moon Sign Book—scan down a column, and look for the information. You must understand what that information means, and of equal importance, the theory behind that information. An example of what I mean here would be the discussion of “Triplicities” spoken of in the above question. Of course, it is easy to make errors in anything; but errors due to a lack of basic knowledge about the subject, and an unwillingness to learn what needs to be known, are absolutely unforgivable.
So please; whatever you do, LEARN the basics of what you must learn, and KNOW how to use that basic knowledge. In addition, you must get into the habit of checking your work at least four times, each time looking for assumptions, and a genuine lack of understanding in that which your ego—or lower self—has you convinced you already ‘know.’ If you don’t do these things, you will not simply fail in obtaining that which you desire from your magic: you will call down upon yourself a Slingshot Effect of such proportion, you will not know what day of the week it is, let alone how to ‘undo’ what you have done.
Below then, is a list of texts the magician must have when working out the times and conditions of preparing the Impedimenta of the Art. Whether the weapon in question be the Sword or the Pentacle, these texts will enable the Operator to not only construct them under the proper astrological auspices, but will give him an understanding of their theoretical nature and structure, and lead him into further investigations of their occult nature. Your Subjective Synthesis needs just such an exercise in depth, breadth, and precision, if it is to work for you by bringing you the results you want, as opposed to working against you by bringing you utter failure and the horrendous Slingshot Effect you neither want nor need. I trust this compilation will be of use to the hard working reader. There are other books that can be of service to be sure. But their use will be strictly determined by the taste, temperament, and technique of the magician.

Magical Thought of the Week of February 5 - 11, 2007.
Guided Reading to the Twelve Steps to Spiritual Enlightenment
In the Author’s Response to Readers’ Questions column of January 22 – 28, 2007, a reader commented and asked, in Question 5, the following (my replies are in Italics):
“Looking over the recommended reading list you have provided with the study component of the recommended curriculum I began to form the following question: Should a student study certain material in line with the practice component?”
Most definitely. There must be a coordinated approach that will fulfill the intellectual component of one’s curriculum, while the practice component allows for application of the (eventually) comprehended intellectual material. This application will produce the Experiential Knowledge I have written of so many times before. In turn, this Experiential Knowledge will then (gradually) be Apprehended by you, making it a part of your living being. So yes, this is essential.
“I know that you have already stated that the Way of the Pilgrim can aid with Step III of the Twelve steps but are there other books that would best benefit the student if studied during a time of specific practice? ANY additional information in this regard would be greatly appreciated.”
I tried to give an example as you state above. But without knowing more about you, I cannot make specific recommendations. When it comes to my private students, yes, I have very specific recommendations for them: and all are making extraordinarily rapid progress, safely and sanely. And as far as I know, none of them have any complaints.
Somehow, this reply of mine stuck with me. After ruminating over it, I decided that I treated this reader—and all those who are in such a quandary—unfairly. So even though I (still) insist that the Oral Tradition is the only way in which specific readings can effectively be assigned to an individual (student), there are still those reading materials that are more ‘template-like’ in nature, and which potentially can be of help to those who study them in a coordinated way with the Steps of Regardie’s book.
In light of this, I have come up with what I think will aid the individual who is genuinely working from the Twelve Steps to Spiritual Enlightenment, and who will not relent until Illumination occurs. The list follows. The readings cited here are coordinated with each of the 12 Steps, and are taken from my private Magical Journals. That is, these are the books I studied under the tutelage of Israel Regardie when I began working this program of Spiritual Unfoldment in 1971 (through 1974.) I trust these recommendations will help those who are ready for them (most are available from Amazon. Com. Others will have to be found through used books dealers, such as Abe Books.)
Step I – Body Awareness. Recommended Readings—Gray’s Anatomy and The body has a head, by Gustav Eckstein
Step II – Relaxation. Recommended Readings— The Relaxation Response, by Herbert Benson
Step III – Rhythmic Breathing. Recommended Readings—The Science of Breath, by Yogi Ramacharaka and, The Way of a Pilgrim, Translated by R. M. French
Step IV – Mind Awareness. Recommended Readings—Self-Analysis, by Karen Horney, An Elementary Textbook of Psychoanalysis, by Charles Brenner, and Psychosynthesis, by Roberto Assagioli
Step V – Concentration. Recommended Readings—Teachings of the Mystics, by W. T. Stace, Varieties of Religious Experience, by William James, The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary, by Karl Von Eckartshausen, and The Candle of Vision, by A.E.
Step VI – Developing the Will. Recommended Readings—The Act of Will, by Roberto Assagioli
Step VII – Christ’s Breastplate. Recommended Readings—Mysticism, by Evlyn Underhill
Step VIII – The Middle Pillar Ritual. Recommended Readings—The Art of True Healing, by Israel Regardie
Step IX – Symbol of Devotion. Recommended Readings—The Loves and the Fishes, by Herward Carrington and The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life, by Hannah Whitall Smith.
Step X – Practice of the Presence of God. Recommended Readings—The Cloud of Unknowing, (written by an anonymous English Monk, circa 14th century. Edition with commentary and translation by Ira Progoff is very good.)
Step XI – Invoke Often! Recommended Readings—Readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament (The Ignatius Bible: Revised Standard Version-Second Catholic Edition, 2005, preferred)
Step XII – Unity – All is God. Recommended Readings—The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius
Those who study these writings diligently and sincerely will find them to be great aids in achieving the results each Step is designed to produce.

“Stressing” and its Use in Magical and Mystical Processes
Many years ago, Frater Albertus taught me a simple method of entering more completely into mystical states of awareness. In later years, I found this technique to be of inestimable value in gaining deeper insights into magical and mystical written material as well. Additionally, as the years went on, I found that it could also be used with great profit in acquiring knowledge of any kind. That is, it easily lends itself to the process of obtaining that not-so-obvious knowledge that underlies all learning efforts. Thus, while the average reader of this column may initially apply this technique to his magical practices and mystical exercises, he would do well to become so familiar with it that he can apply it at will to any new learning or analytical endeavor. The process I am speaking of here is one I simply refer to as “Stressing.” Here is how it works:
Let’s take a simple admonition:
(Original Phrase) — It is good to do Good.
This barebones phrase can and often is used by students as a mantra if you will; one that enables them to focus on the essence of the concept(s) behind the phrase. Fair enough. And if recited over and over, it most certainly will deliver up some understanding of just those thoughts and emotions that underlie this meaningful series of words. Now, let us introduce this so-called “Stressing Process” and apply it to these six words and see what else can be gained from them.
(1) IT is good to do Good
(2) It IS good to do Good
(3) It is GOOD to do Good
(4) It is good TO do Good
(5) It is good to DO Good
(6) It is good to do GOOD
Rather than repeat these six words in a monotonous, repetitious way as originally given in the original phrase above, and thereby allowing the mind to flirt hither and thither, we do the following. During each repetition, successive words are stressed in the order they appear in the phrase. That is, on the first repetition, IT is stressed. In the second repetition, IS becomes the word stressed. In the third repetition, GOOD is stressed. etc. This procedure forces the mind to associate and explore hidden connections and meanings embedded in the words themselves. These are then married to the overall concept(s) embraced by the phrase, producing an entirely new coalescence of abstractions and ideas that would have previously gone undiscovered. Of course, such discovery can only lead to an exponential growth of new understanding and personal insights, enabling the individual to attain to that which he desires, and all in a more complete and holistic way.
If this innocent process is given a fair trial, I am certain it will give to the Practitioner what it has given to me and those to whom I have taught it: a further technique for exploring the Inner Realm of their own nature. One that will add to their ever growing armory of practices that will eventually allow them to become who they already are.

Magical Thought of the Week of January 8 - 14, 2007.
The Nature of Truth and its Role in Magical and Mystical
Attainment
Listen to those who people the world around you: “The truth of the matter is…” or “If the truth be known…” Perhaps you heard “Ours is the true magical order because…” then again, “To tell you the truth…” This word, “truth” is bandied about so much in daily life, and used with such flippancy and carelessness, that it and the concept for which it stands has become utterly meaningless. It has not only lost all of its impact, but the very essence of its interior meaning has dissipated into the casual sayings in which it is buried. Like thousands of other potent and important words, it has fallen into that class of useless verbiage that conveys nothing, acting as filler to connect verbal space by those whose intellect is as empty as the hollow words they use. You know the type I mean. The, “Well, like ya’ know, like ya’ know, like ya’ know” crowd. If my appraisal of this situation is correct, what then is this thing called truth? Why is it important, how can we come to know it, and equally important, how can we use it properly in moving to magical and mystical states of attainment?
In my opinion, the ultimate nature of that which we call “Truth” consists of the conscious apprehension of an Interior (subjective or subconscious) state or experience that can be tested in the Exterior world (Malkuth). What does this mean? It simply means that those interior experiences or states of awareness that we consciously experience during our magical rites or mystical practices must possess key elements that can be tested in the outer world of daily life. If any such consciously apprehended Interior experiences or states cannot be so tested, they are to be discarded as a mental or psychic aberration; one that can and will lead to those two greatest threats to the magician or mystic: self-illusion and self-delusion. Let us examine more closely what is meant by “conscious apprehension” so as to remove any confusion. (For those of you who read this column regularly, you will recall the essential structure of the following schematic and its meaning. To those who may be new to these readings, some thought given to this line diagram will be found to pay substantial dividends. The version given below is an expanded form of that which is cited in this column for November 27 – December 3, 2006.) The schematic of which I speak is:
Learn---->Understand----Comprehend---->(Practice)---->
Experiential Knowledge---->Apprehension
Let us take an example. Suppose you are looking for “Truth 2.” In our search for this “Truth 2,” knowledge which is comprehended is placed into practice through such techniques (in our case) as magical rituals, ceremonial actions, or mystical introversions. This ‘practice-element’ leads to an entirely new form of knowledge which I refer to as “Experiential Knowledge.” That is, a knowledge which gives deeper insights and establishes new connections with similar ideas (that are part of, say, a “Truth 1”) which the student has previously comprehended and made his own through earlier practices. This new Experiential Knowledge of Truth 2 will gradually be so assimilated by the mind of the student that he reaches a point where he consciously apprehends—makes that new Experiential Knowledge—a living part of his own Interior life, both consciously and subconsciously. Thus, he has consciously apprehended something that was initially an Interior (or subjective) experience or state, but which now is also an integral part of his daily magical or mystical consciousness as well.
But it cannot and must not end here. For in all cases, Truth—the genuine article—will always present to the conscious mind of the student, elements of itself that can be put to the test in the Exterior World of men and matter. If the test succeeds, then the individual has most certainly attained to “a Truth.” If it fails, then it must be rejected as a self-illusional or self-delusional ploy of his lower nature, created and offered to turn him from the Path of Spiritual Unfoldment and magical growth or mystical attainment. Likewise, if no such elements of the “Truth” present themselves for testing, then the unveiled lie of the lower nature is to be eradicated and discarded as quickly and completely as possible.
It is important to understand here that this simple “Truth Concept and Test” as I term it, is not some secret society or magical order concept to be used only for magical and mystical ends. Far from it! In fact, while we use this device as a mainstay in our magical and mystical endeavors, we can and should also use it in our daily affairs of living, working, and moving through the world of men and their society.
If you study the above with a careful eye, you will be able to answer for yourself ‘why’ knowing the Truth is so important, ‘how’ you can come to know it, and will be able to devise proper ways of ‘using’ it in you own magical or mystical efforts. Why will you be able to apply this simple “Truth Axiom” to your own specific, particular magical, mystical, or life-cases? Because now you know what Truth ‘looks like.’ Don’t you? Think about it.
Thought there was more to this ‘Truth’ business, didn’t you? There is not. As with all things that are ultimately based in empirical reality, the Truth is always simple. It is only man, with his need to unnecessarily complicate and make complex the simple things, and to bend things to his own will through his stylized interpretation, that problems arise. Guard yourself accordingly. Let no one tell you your own Truth: discover it and make it your own through your conscious apprehension of it.

Magical Thought of the Week of December 18 - December 24, 2006.
The Terror of Apparent Reality
We look at the world around us everyday, and react to what we see. The coldness of base matter; the rigidity of physical laws that define what we can and cannot do with that matter; the unforgiving attitudes of men and society; the tenuous nature of even our closest associations; the financial demands that press upon us from all sides; the specter of the veiled future. Is it any wonder so many of us have turned to Magic or Mysticism (or both) in an effort to change the structure of these uncertainties; to mold conditions and circumstances to our will; to find some measure of relief through such affirming activities that assure us we are not powerless, puppet-like playthings abandoned by some freak chance event of the universe that set all into motion?
This ultimate, underlying feeling of fatality of human existence is too well known by all of us: whether we be atheist, agnostic, believer, or religionist. None escape those unpredictable moments when this fatality is seen with such stark clarity that we are swept into believing that regardless of what we do, we will be pulled under by these fatalistic tides that truly do rule and govern the physical universe—and our very lives. At these times we feel it is all so pointless—this believing, struggling, striving, and working to turn those uncontrolled, ever-changing streams of limitation away from us, and somehow make ourselves lord and master of our world and our own life.
The question is, what do we really know of these physical and personal worlds in which we live, move, and have our being? Is there any way we can analyze them so that maybe—just maybe—all of our magical work and mystical strivings are not simply vainglorious attempts at deluding ourselves, but are actually viable methods that we can use to crown our lives with success and fulfillment? Success and fulfillment that we somehow instinctively ‘feel’ is our true inalienable right? I think there is. In fact, from my perspective—based upon my own life experiences ‘out there’ in the ‘real’ world, and my involvement in both Magic and Mysticism—I know there is. And this is what I would like to share with you here and now. Perhaps it will even give some of you new insight into your own perceptions and perspectives of this thing we call “reality” and arm you with new ways to react and interact with it.
We can know the following. That the world of base matter ‘out there’ is just that: a universe that operates according to well-defined laws. If you trip, you fall. If you stop breathing, you die. It is harder to walk up stairs than it is to walk down. All of these physical laws operating in base matter serve us well once we understand them. And while they can be modified or adapted in certain ways, in their essence, they are fixed: at least, as far as we know, based upon our everyday interaction with them. Whether new laws will be discovered that will increase our knowledge and expand our eventual use of these older laws remains to be seen. But for now, “what you see is what you get” certainly applies to the fixed behavior of these physical laws. But our problems don’t generally involve struggling with these laws; at least, not so they keep us up at night, make our emotional lives pure hell during our waking hours, or turn us into mental robots, commanded to buy every new fad idiocy that crosses our television screens. No. Our problems lie in those situations and conditions that are inextricably interlinked—not with the world of matter directly—but with the world of men: the world of personal situation, apparent life-condition, and living productive, prosperous, and happy lives.
Why such a long statement of the ‘obvious?’ Why is it so important to differentiate between the world of base matter and those personal worlds of ours? Because all too often we allow the line dividing them to become so blurred that we forget that there are differences between them, and begin treating our personal worlds as if they too operated according to so many similar laws throughout the world of matter. Example. “If I work hard, I’ll not only keep my job, but go up the company ladder.” Or, “If I study hard, I’ll make better grades and get into a better graduate school (or get a better job, or a position that will allow me to marry the boss’s daughter, or the boss’s son, or what have you).” We have a talent for trying to take the guaranteed results of physical law and translate them into our personal world through such ‘reasoning.’ In effect, we are so sold on the apparent nature of the reality of the material world, that we feel we can mimic its laws and use them to get what we want and where we want, by clawing and scratching in the world of men. The tragedy of this type of thinking is very well mirrored in that 1970s song, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” And so it goes. Year after year, decade after decade, until all that is left are those few precious, remaining years, and—the open grave. But if we are to turn this situation around, it takes more than realizing that we cannot mimic physical law and scratch and claw in the world of men. We have to look deeply into the fabric of our own personal worlds; our worlds of situation, condition, and circumstance, and see what we find there. And what we find there may very well surprise you.
When we examine our personal worlds, we see that they are composed of one singular quality upon which all other states hinge: that of ceaseless change; of continual flux. Nothing remains as it is: all is constantly turning into something else—whether we like it or not; whether it is what we desire or not. It is as if this thing we term “reality” is not really ‘real’ after all. Because if it were, then certainly there would be more permanency to it than there is; something that would mimic the permanency of physical law, but which it does not. In fact, this is correct: what we see is “apparent reality” only: that which I refer to as “Actuality.” The very word itself—derived from the term “act”—bespeaks of a series of conditions that by definition must change until the event itself reaches culmination. And all acts take place on some type of screen or stage; one that allows the progression of events to occur, as the Causal Agent behind the act dictates.
If there is a Causal Agent underlying every human act, and if this act is the basis of all Actuality, then two conditions must apply. First, there must be some force behind the act. Second, as stated above, there must be some place for that Actuality to be played out. What could this Causal Agent be that underlies all human actions, and which gives rise to this Actuality that is then played out on some screen or stage? Of course, it is thought itself. The entire world of human affairs, conditions, and situations can now be seen as nothing more than a screen or stage that provides the setting for Actuality. An Actuality which is literally created by our very thoughts.
But as each act is composed of a series of movements, so too is the Causal Agent that creates this Actuality. That is, this Causal Agent does not consist of a single thought, but of patterns of thoughts, the individual elements of which are of like or similar kinds of thoughts. These thoughts—whether for good or ill—are the sum and substance of Reality; the inner Reality of the mind, not of the ever-changing forms found in the outside world of human conditions and situations. Contemplated over time, mused over, taken apart, analyzed, and considered, these patterns of thought are projected outward upon a physical and personal universe: a theater, where they take an exact form in that ever-changing Actuality which we carelessly call reality. In fact, there is nothing ‘real’ about this outer world reality at all: it is nothing more than an “Apparent Reality” or Actuality. An Actuality whose forms, conditions, and situations change as rapidly and completely as do the thoughts of the individual who is generating the Causal Agent. The terror of this apparent reality is a reaction of ignorance to something no more real than an illusionary brick wall that possesses no substance whatsoever. For if the individual learns to form, control, and project his thought by some technical device, then his Actuality will become the exact mirror image of that inner Reality: the domain of his dominant thought patterns.
But how are such thought patterns projected? Is it a matter of struggling to release some series of thoughts, or grunting and grimacing to externalize the Causal Agent on the screen of Apparent Reality so that which is desired is manifested in this ever-changing world of form? The devices used for such projection are what all of us having been doing all along: Magic and Mysticism. And in the latter case, using what I refer to as “Higher Mysticism” (New Thought) to manifest that which we will. Whether it be a mystical contemplation exercise or the fashioning of the Blasting Rod of Art, all are devices we use to project the thought patterns of our minds into the fabric of Actuality such that our will is made manifest in the world of form.
Be not deceived by the seemingly ‘separate virtues’ of any such device. They possess virtue, yes. But in the final analysis, even that virtue is due to the patterns of expectations and thoughts generated by the practitioner. The time comes when all such tools can and must be laid aside, and the Patterns of Creation called up by the Practitioner made manifest in the world of Actuality, due solely to the Practitioner being able to become One with both Reality and Actuality at his choosing. Continue to learn, understand, comprehend, and eventually apprehend your Magic and Mysticism. Continue to use those devices of each to achieve the projection necessary at the point you are currently at in these fields. But also remember; let that awareness be part of you, that the world you seek to change is as pliable and adaptable to your thought as a lump of clay is to your fingers. And remember too, that all of the power needed for creating all that you desire in the world of form is within you at all times, and no where else. The next time you undertake that mystical meditation or handle that magical weapon in some rite or ceremony, preface your work by recalling that they are tools—necessary tools for the present—but tools that your mind and hand will one day outgrow. Continue to work, but at all times, remember that all Cause lies within you, and nowhere else. You will find it easier said than done—at first.
If this paper has been difficult to read, rest assured, it was even more difficult to write. But it contains much that will enable the serious student to further build his state of Subjective Synthesis, so that he can achieve that Unity spoken of above.

Magical Thought of the Week of December 11 - December 17, 2006.
A Simple Magical Aspersion for Protection and the Attraction of
Opportunity
If you would believe the current trends of the times, your daily regimen of magical activity would probably begin with the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) followed by the Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram (BRH.) Not to mention all of those ‘necessary’ signs and hand/arm gestures that are ‘indispensable’ in getting you started for the day, or ending your day on a ‘proper’ magical note. Then too, after years of faithful execution of these required rites, you might be wondering why you are in the same place you were when you began. Or indeed, at a worse place in life than the day you started. All too often, such are the complaints made by those who have accepted the “Magical Current(s)” of the day. These sincere workers in Magic found—as have so many of you who wrote to me have stated—that these so called Currents and rites just do not work. So what to do?
The following is an Old System of Magic derivation and application that is simplicity itself—but one that works very well. It has not only been used by myself successfully throughout the decades, but by my current students in the Oral Tradition as well. These highly educated, intelligent and hard working people have attested to it as being indispensable in their daily lives. For this simple ritual not only provides a maximum of protection in all daily activities, but attracts to the practitioner no small amount of opportunity—both spiritual and worldly. It does this, because unlike the LBRP and the BRH which—as their own adherents admit—diminishes throughout the day and night, the effects of this ritual act intensifies over time. Day after day, week after week, month after month, its effects build up, bringing more and more of those desirable things in life, while neutralizing or removing those negativities and evils that can beset the magical practitioner.
The version given below is a brief form of that which I teach to my personal students. Nevertheless, it is quite effective. If you follow the instructions given, I think you will be more than a little surprised at the results you receive—and even more delighted with that which it brings to you.
Throughout the following ritual act, do not concern yourself with any “visualizations,” gestures, or the like. This is not New Age fad ‘Magic.’ Instead, focus on your movements, i.e., on the physical actions themselves, and recall to mind your purposes: to invoke protection and to bring forth those opportunities of the Spirit and of Malkuth that you desire. Nothing more. Simply be conscious—but fully conscious—of your actions and intentions.
Magical Rite of Protection and Attraction of Opportunity
Obtain a new, earthen vessel never used for any other purpose (thus assuring its efficacy—see last week’s paper on “Efficacy” in this column.) Be sure the vessel is unglazed. It is best to do this on a day and hour ruled by Venus. Likewise during this time, obtain a new container of ordinary table salt, and a new bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (be certain the olive oil comes from the Mediterranean, but preferably, from Italy. Do not use any from America, Australia, Turkey, or Spain.)
On a day and hour ruled by Jupiter, obtain a new container of mountain spring drinking water. That is, water that has only been filtered and irradiated by ultraviolet light.
Enter your Magical Chamber, stand at the center of the room, face East, and add some of the water to your earthen vessel. After this, place a small quantity of salt from the container into your right hand, and slowly pour the salt into the water. Do not stir the salt-water mixture.
Now, take one step forward with your right foot, and bring your left foot up to meet it at your new position. Place your right hand into the water, withdraw it, and begin sprinkling in the East as you recite the following:
Thou shalt purge me with hyssop O Lord, and I shall be clean. Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (From Psalm 51)
Recite this blessing only once as you move from the East, through the South, through the West, the North, and return to the East. That is, you repeat the prayer and the sprinkling slowly, focusing on the words and your mechanical actions.
Return to the center of the room, and face East once more. Take a drop of Olive Oil from its container, and place it on the tip of the index finger of your right hand. If you are a Christian or come from this tradition, mark a Cross on your forehead (Up to down, and from right to left) while focusing on your intentions of protection and opportunity. If you are from any other religious tradition, simply touch the Olive Oil to the center of your forehead. This ends the rite.
As you will find, this Old System Magic rite—as with all Old System Magic—is most certainly built upon principles. But it is not my intention to go into them here. Nevertheless, what is given here will be of inestimitable value to those who follow it—daily.
One final note. This ritual action is to be performed twice a day, every day, the second performance to be done no sooner than 8 hours from the first, and no later than 12 hours.
Enjoy your new found protection and opportunities.

Magical Thought of the Week of December 4 - December 10, 2006.
Efficacy and its Role in Old System Magic
Attendant to last week’s discussion in this column is an underlying theme which has been all but forgotten in the practice of contemporary magic: that of efficacy. If you think about the following quoted from last week’s posting, chances are you just may see it for yourself:
“Along with this is the question of 'paying the price' of success in whatever it is we do - magic, alchemy, professional or personal life choices. The price we pay is the mark of our commitment to the goal we seek to realize. How often haven't you been told by someone who contacts you, "I'll do anything! Anything to learn magic, alchemy, etc." only to ask a few questions and realize that the person who has come to you asking for your time, knowledge, and experience places more emphasis on their monthly cable TV fee, martial arts instruction, or monthly visit to the tattoo parlor or body piercing than in actually learning occult arts. They are not willing to do whatever it takes, only to SAY whatever it takes.”
That is, underlying people’s unwillingness to ‘do whatever it takes’ to succeed, is their unconscious rejection of the Principle of Efficacy. Yes, it manifests in the ways stated in the above quotation. But always this deep, fundamental rejection is the causal agent behind the effect that manifests as one’s refusal to work. That is, to do real work, regardless of the cost in time, effort, energy, or money.
Why should we be so concerned with this causal force? Why did the Fathers of the Grimoires insist on an absolute adherence to its dictates? Why should we expend every effort to comply with the injunctions laid down by this ‘old fashioned’ principle? The answer is quite simple, yet the mechanics behind it may surprise you.
The noun, “efficacy,” literally means “The power to produce an effect.” That is, efficacy is—in and of itself—a ‘power’ or ‘force’ that when directed in some way produces a (predetermined) effect. Without this power (force), nothing can be accomplished; for the energy of motivation and manifestation—so important in the production of the (desired) effect—is missing. This most basic of all magical principles was second nature to the magicians of the Dark Ages, the Medieval and Renaissance eras, and was as much a part of their ritual acts or ceremonial actions as was the construction and consecration of their Circles of Art. This is why many of the grimoires do not belabor the point or go into it beyond only the briefest of mentions: it was understood to be the foundation upon which the entire magical rite was based.
But why is this so? What is the nature of this energy that the seemingly endless search for “a black rooster that never trod hen,” or for a ring of pure gold with certain inscriptions upon it, that is transferred to the rite such that success is more probable with it, or utterly impossible without it? The energy that is imparted is so great and of such magnitude, that all other natural phenomena must kneel before it. For it is the energy of the Hidden Self: the energy of the magician’s Spiritual Source which—operating in and through the magician—manifests in the rite to produce the desired effect. And this is brought about by the magician involving his total self in acquiring just those ‘rare’ and hard-to-find materials, altered states of consciousness, or correct use of the Names of Power that the ritual acts or ceremonial actions require. For it is through the intense thought; the self-disciplined searches; the step-by-step, daily, weekly, or monthly one-pointed conscious focus of the magician’s mind on the rite and its requirements, that those channels needed for the force to flow from his Spiritual Source into the ritual, are established.
This is why so many today fail in their modern day magical practices, or indeed, in their daily, mundane lives. Instead of using a wand made of Hazel or Oak, they use a dowel stick purchased from their local hardware store. Instead of devoting an extra four hours after the (normal) workday to the report the boss wants done in a certain way, they grudgingly give one hour and simply highlight what is expedient. And then such people wonder why their magic fails, or why one of their co-workers gets that raise, promotion, or both. And always, it’s the book’s fault or their ‘bad luck.’ No. It’s their lack of efficacy; their refusal to apply their entire conscious—and therefore unconscious—selves to the task at hand.
It would do all of us no end of good when facing some seemingly daunting task to stand back, take a deep breath, and decide which way we will proceed: give the efficacy to the act that it requires if we want to succeed, or pull back and do what is expedient and easy. For if we do the latter, we had better prepare for something else too: inevitable failure. But then, you just might be surprised how many people ‘demand’ success from life in all things because they have been taught to give the least and expect the most. That may be the “American way.” After all, it is their “right.” But it is not our way: the way of the magician, or the way of the mystic. Efficacy is the basis upon which all lasting efforts are built. It is a force—pure and simple. An irresistible force that can and will cut through or disintegrate any immovable object or impossible condition, regardless of how immovable that obstacle may be, or how impossible that condition may seem. So get use to it. There is simply no other way to make your magic work—or to live your life.

Wisdom and Power of the Ages — The Time of Its Re-Emergence is at Hand
The Word is everywhere today, and it is spreading. The Wisdom of Old System Magic cannot—and will not be hid any longer under the New Age bushel of dogma and pseudo-doctrine; of lodge and Order; of personalities and badges; of half-truths and deceits; of ignorance and fear. As a light that has been hidden by a great darkness must eventually and inevitably put that darkness and its shadows to flight, so too has the light of Old System Magic broken through, once again, into the conscious minds and intellectual strivings of those who would call themselves Magician. After a hundred-and-twenty-plus years of distortion, mutilation, and rejection, the sacred images and words of the Grimoires—those Grammars of Magic—created by the Fathers of Old System Magic, are once more reaching the furthermost corners of the mind of those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. This is the message my friend and colleague, Mr. Mark Stavish, Director, Institute for Hermetic Studies, has summarized so beautifully and eloquently in a post he recently sent to me. Many were the conversations and numerous the hours he and I spent hammering out this magical point and that magical reckoning, all of which led to his quoted letter below.
At the same time, his post captures the essence and extends some of the points I made in my replies to reader questions this week (see the Author’s Reply to Readers’ Questions tab on this website.)
Too many people expect something for nothing when they enter Magic. Still more expect a great something for even less work—or is it from the lip-service they give that masquerades as ‘work.’ It doesn’t work this way as I have said countless times in my writings, and as Mr. Stavish echoes and delineates in additional detail below. From such insights and experiential knowledge as Stavish demonstrates in his letter, one also learns that there are no guarantees in Magic (or in anything in life, for that matter.) All that exists are probabilities; probabilities whose potential for manifestation increase exponentially as the individual follows the simple process of:
Learn---->Understand---->Comprehend---->Apprehend
and whose techniques I have explained so many times in my books and in this column.
I invite my readers to read Mr. Stavish’s paper below, and to pay its contents very close attention, and give its messages special heed. For if this is done, many of the problems that beset you can and will be cleared up in the twinkling of an eye. That is, after you Work, and achieve an Apprehension of its content.
Mr. Stavish’s paper follows….
Dear Dr. Lisiewski,
Our discussions regarding operative magic, with emphasis on Talismans, seems to always lead us back to two very important points. One you discussed several weeks ago in your Magical Thought of the Week, concerning the Element of Fire, and its role in all occult work. Fire is the most important of the Elements and often the least understood or used. Only the Element of Fire can initiate our consciousness to new levels, as it is a direct expression of the energies of the Higher Self, the Holy Upper Trinity of the Tree of Life, our Holy Guardian Angel or true inner initiator.
Along with this is the question of 'paying the price' of success in whatever it is we do - magic, alchemy, professional or personal life choices. They are not willing to do whatever it takes, only to SAY whatever it takes. As such, they will not pay the price in time, money, intellectual or emotional power, in other words - commit the energy - it takes for success.
A simple example anyone can prove to themselves is in what we have mentioned so many times. Energy follows the mental plan. The mental plan follows our actions. Precision in the plan and actions bring precise results. Take making a talisman for example.
Anyone who has taken the time - often only a few extra minutes, a half hour at most - to draw a geometrically exact polygon (i.e. a pointed star) on their talismans can feel it take on the energy as it is being made. The act of will, or focused consciousness, the extra concern, desire for precision, beauty, and actual results, makes the talisman alive long before it is ever consecrated or dedicated to use.
The student goes from being an experimenter to an Artist, and results are guaranteed because of the well established mental framework with which it was prepared and executed.
The price was paid, and the 'purchase' made. The Artist owns it because they have created it and deserve it.
You have mentioned to me that when you were doing some magical work you knew what items you needed, heeded the instructions of the grimoires and did not haggle 'over the price of a black cock' went your way and the desired effects came forth. Some have wondered why this is, but we know it and it is simple. Emotionally the desired ends were more important than the money it cost for the wand, vessel of brass, or what have you. This is no different than the person who makes the sacrifice to take out a loan, go to college or technical school, and reach a goal rather than sit in fear of a thousand things that could rise up from their subconscious and keep them from doing it.
Today we see a similar thing in the so-called occult community. People who would dare to call themselves students of the Art, blaspheme its holy name by whining and complaining about their lack of this, that, or the other thing and why everything should be handed to them at no cost to themselves.
They dare use the word - FREE. We know there is nothing for free in life. Everything has a price. While they, the end user may not be paying it, someone else is. This kind of 'spiritual welfare' mentality is poison to success. While discretion must be used in what one is paying for, how much, and why, in the end, even a fool separated from their money will quickly gain wisdom if they are serious about the Path and not concerned about what it takes from them.
How often haven't we heard the phase, "But I can't afford...!" In other words, that acronym you are so fond of quoting, "Behold the Ultimate Truth (B.U.T.) B.U.T. I am not willing to spend that much time, money, or both to achieve my goal, nor am I willing to do what I need to do in order to make the time and/or money available for achieving the goal, and want someone else to do it for me." B.U.T., B.U.T, B.U.T! There are no “B.U.T’s” as we both know so very well, nor are there any "I can't!" There is only an Act of Will, an act of choice - I will, or I will not. In magic, there is no 'can' or 'cannot' nor is there any ‘B.U.T.’
Book Eleven of the Hermetic texts say:
19. Consider this yourself. Command your soul to go anywhere, and it will be there quicker than your command. Bid it to go to the ocean and again it is there at once, not as if it had gone from place to place but was already there. Order it to fly up to heaven and it will need no wings, nor will anything impede it, neither the fire of the sun, nor the ether, nor the whirlwind, nor the other heavenly bodies, but cutting through them all it will soar up to the last body. And if you wish to break through all this and to contemplate what is beyond (if there is anything beyond the cosmos), it is in your power.
20. See what power you have and what speed! You can do all these things and yet God cannot? Reflect on God in this way as having all within Himself as ideas: the cosmos, Himself, the whole. If you do not make yourself equal to God you cannot understand Him. Like is understood by like. Grow to immeasurable size. Be free from every body, transcend all time. Become eternity and thus you will understand God. Suppose nothing to be impossible for yourself. Consider yourself immortal and able to understand everything: all arts, sciences and the nature of every living creature. Become higher that all heights and lower than all depths. Sense as one within yourself the entire creation: fire, water, the dry and the moist. Conceive yourself to be in all places at the same time: in the earth, the sea, in heaven; that you are not yet born, that you are within the womb, that you are young, old, dead; that you are beyond death. Conceive all things at once: time, places, actions, qualities and quantities; then you can understand God
21. But if you lock up your soul in your body, abase it and say: “I understand nothing; I can do nothing; I am afraid of the sea; I cannot reach heaven; I do not know who I was nor who I shall be,” what have you to do with God? For you cannot conceive anything beautiful or good while you are attached to the body and are evil. For the greatest evil is to ignore what belongs to God. To be able to know and to will and to hope is the straight and easy way appropriate to each that will lead to the Supreme Good. When you take this road this Good will meet you everywhere and will be experienced everywhere, even where and when you do not expect it; when awake, asleep, in a ship, on the road, by night, by day, when speaking and when silent, for there is nothing which it is not.
Herein is the important point. Once we enter our Path, IT decides what our price of continued advancement will be, in time, talent, and treasure, and it will require, demand, and take all three from us until there is nothing left to stand between us and our goal.
You have often said that magic and alchemy are the hardest and most difficult paths there are, and filled with more sorrow, despair, broken dreams and bodies than any other. This I can attest to, and as you so very well know for yourself, once we have accepted this - THEN the Golden Dawn of Illumination arises within us, not before, and not with hidden fears buried deep inside. Once we accept it, then the Good rises up to meet us, and It—the God [Good] is everywhere.
Sincerely,
Mark Stavish

Magical Thought of the Week of November 20 - November 26, 2006.
Note to Our Readers: Due to an unexpected situation, Dr. Lisiewski will not have a posting in this column this week. This column will resume next week as usual.
In the meantime, we wish all of our readers a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday. Please take some time to reflect on your life, where you are at, and where you want to be. And let those who are important to you know just how much you truly appreciate them. It would be wise also, to take some time and turn inward to that Interior nature which is the greatest part of you. For therein lies all the answers you seek.

Magic, Higher Mysticism, and Quantum Physics — They Have More in Common than You Think
In our work in Magic and Higher Mysticism (New Thought) we are often confronted with such statements as, ‘the way we view the real world is a reflection of our magical practices’ or ‘the nature of our thought patterns determines our perceptions of reality.’ Yet again, we hear the oft touted maxim, ‘We are at where we are in life by right of consciousness.’
While those who have not experienced altered states of magical consciousness and the mystical levels of awareness upon which such proverb-like expressions are based simply smile at such ideas, even those who know the truth of these declarations from their own experience will—at times—wonder about the ultimate nature of those very experiences: those experiences that have indeed brought them to where they are in life at this very moment. More often than not we attempt to shore up our lack of essential understanding by turning back to the very magical text or mystical book that produced the effects—whether Interior or Exterior—that we wanted and received. We return to them again and again, seeking some type of succor that will someday, somehow, eliminate those reoccurring doubts that linger in the corners of our most secret thoughts.
But always, there is that nagging question; that wondering if indeed what we have achieved or received is truly due to the virtue of our magical or mystical efforts. We quietly wonder if those achievements and that worldly gain is not simply due to some coincidence, synchronicity, or some other type of ‘happen-stance,’ and that in reality, our spiritual work is not just so much fluff and flutter. It happens to all of us; and usually, more often than makes us comfortable. Put another way, we furtively wish for some ‘hard core’ evidence ‘out there’ upon which we can hang our hat of dubious wondering; and in doing so, put our doubts to rest, once and for all.
Modern science—and especially Physics—has been amassing more and more physical evidence that may very well quell—once and for all—the hidden doubts and secret fears of all those who tread the magical and mystical paths. Curious, isn’t it, that a branch of science devoted to the study of physical law, could not only aid us in our understanding of the spiritual, but give us insights in how spiritual law works. From the speculation of the existence of the “God Particle,” to Einstein’s equations in which he searched for a Unified Field theory, to the postulation of Black Holes, and now, to the study of Quantum Mechanics, more and more hard core, physically measured data is explaining the dual nature of matter, energy, light, and indeed, of the entire manifest universe. One very recent book in particular, Quantum Enigmas, published by none other than the prestigious Oxford University Press, may be of serious interest to readers of this column. Below is the review of this book as it appears on Amazon.Com I trust they will not mind too much my placing it here for your ease of review, seeing that I suggest those of you who do purchase this book purchase it directly from Amazon.
“The most successful theory in all of science--and the basis of one third of our economy--says the strangest things about the world and about us. Can you believe that physical reality is created by our observation of it? Physicists were forced to this conclusion, the quantum enigma, by what
they observed in their laboratories.
“Trying to understand the atom, physicists built quantum mechanics and found, to their embarrassment, that their theory intimately connects consciousness with the physical world. Quantum Enigma explores what that implies and why some founders of the theory became the foremost objectors to it. Schrodinger showed that it "absurdly" allowed a cat to be in a "superposition" simultaneously dead and alive. Einstein derided the theory's "spooky interactions." With Bell's Theorem, we now know Schrodinger's superpositions and Einstein's spooky interactions indeed exist.
“Authors Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner explain all of this in non-technical terms with help from some fanciful stories and bits about the theory's developers. They present the quantum mystery honestly, with an emphasis on what is and what is not speculation.
“Physics' encounter with consciousness is its skeleton in the closet. Because the authors open the closet and examine the skeleton, theirs is a controversial book. Quantum Enigma's description of the experimental quantum facts, and the quantum theory explaining them, is undisputed. Interpreting what it all means, however, is controversial.
“Every interpretation of quantum physics encounters consciousness. Rosenblum and Kuttner therefore turn to exploring consciousness itself--and encounter quantum physics. Free will and anthropic principles become crucial issues, and the connection of consciousness with the cosmos suggested by some leading quantum cosmologists is mind-blowing.
“Readers are brought to a boundary where the particular expertise of physicists is no longer a sure guide. They will find, instead, the facts and hints provided by quantum mechanics and the ability to speculate for themselves.”
So for all those of us who must wrestle with the doubts and uncertainties underlying the states of consciousness we experience during our magical work and mystical practices, and who need to understand that most powerful of all energy sources in the universe—the human mind—I unreservedly recommend this book.
Take the time and given the attention to understanding your own mind and its role in our work by looking at what some of the “High Priests” of science—the Physicists—have to say about their experimental discoveries underlying that mind of yours. Consider carefully turning your attention to this field of study, rather than seeking out some sappy, whiz-bag weirdo book whose tenets cannot be empirically tested, and whose ‘message’ is designed to confuse you all the more and add to your growing collection of doubts about your work—and yourself.

The Path of Alchemy and Its Relevance to the Serious Student of the Alchemical Mysteries
Not long ago I wrote an endorsement for a new book on Alchemy: The Path of Alchemy, by my friend and colleague, Mark Stavish. This endorsement—which appears in the front matter of the published version—was accurate and complete, and was written based upon the original manuscript I read.
However, only yesterday did I receive a copy of the first published edition of this book. After reading it through carefully, and seeing the very splendid production techniques the publisher, Llewellyn Publications used in printing it, I decided that readers of this column should know about this extremely valuable work. For as so often happens in these matters, the final version of the book turned out to be nothing short of spectacular. So much so, that I wish I had a chance to rewrite my endorsement so that it would reflect the deeper nature, character, and substance of this most important contemporary book on Alchemy.
Mark’s book is absolutely essential for several reasons. First, it gives a sweeping coverage of the subject. From the basic work with plants, to the production of a Herbal Stone; from detailed methods of setting up distillation apparatus, to the basics of Spagyrics; from Water Distillation techniques, to physical health and healing with Spagyrics, and so much more. Second, his illustrations of chemical equipment setups leave no doubt as to the specifics required for such apparatus to be assembled properly and safely. Third, his treatment of Spagyrics is one of the finest I have ever seen.
I consider his book to be among those very, very few contemporary works that will be of inestimitable value to the aspiring student of Alchemy: to that special student who not only wants to do the laboratory work, but who knows that he must do it with a knowledge and an understanding of the theory that lies behind the praxis.
Further, it is my opinion that this book of Mark’s will be of tremendous value to those who will be working from my own three upcoming volumes in Alchemy. I say this, because The Path of Alchemy covers material that I will not be covering in great depth, due to the voluminous material these three volume will deal with. For example. Mark gives detailed instructions on the setting up distillation trains. Mine will cover that same material, but his answers to the more basic instructions some readers may need to know in order to proceed with the Work.
In conclusion, I would like to offer a suggestion to the interested reader of this column. If you buy only three books in Magic, Alchemy, or in any other area of the Occult this year, make certain this is one of them. If you don’t I guarantee you will regret not having done so.
